This trend began in the mid 70's. Punk originated in London, but quickly was adapted to American, Australian, and more of the United Kingdom. Punk was originally an anti-fashion statement. The clothes (which were usually torn, mangled, mismatched, and generally destroyed) were mostly worn by youth (high school- college people). It was the lifestyle for those who were unemployed, or who struggled with low income jobs. Many of these young adults at the time were not all graduates; they were also school leavers.
